Tips to Help Children Understand Sanitary Toothbrush Safety

Tips to Help Children Understand Sanitary Toothbrush SafetyThere are always things to worry about when you first send your child off to preschool, their first sleep over or even to college. As parents, we fret over whether or not they're eating well, are they getting along with their friends, are they being safe and making healthy choices? We prepare our children for independence one step, one lesson at a time. One of the things that we sometimes seem to overlook is teaching our children not only good oral hygiene practices, but how to be sanitary and safe when it comes to our own oral health.

Cleanliness Matters

If you have a preschool child, or one in some type of daycare, the chances are very high that there is a tooth brushing time scheduled into their day. Make sure that you not only communicate with your child's facility to make sure that they're practicing safe oral care, talk to your child about it as well. Toothbrushes in this sort of situation need to be clearly labeled so that your child knows which one is theirs. Teach your child that sharing a toothbrush with a friend is not safe. It is the perfect vessel for transmitting illness, bacteria and germs. Ask your child's day care provider how they handle storage and replacement of tooth brushes. They should be replaced every three months and rinsed thoroughly and stored dry.

Make sure that as you're teaching your child not only how to brush their teeth, but how to rinse the brush after use. Keeping the tooth brush stored in a dry place is important as well as making certain that if you're storing it in a special holder, that it gets cleaned regularly as well.

Make sure your child, no matter what age, realizes the dangers of sharing toothbrushes. It spreads infection, can encourage bacterial growth and can lead to tooth decay and cavities. Our office will be happy to work with you and your child in addressing some of these health concerns. Give us a call today to schedule your child's next cleaning.
