Effective Medicine Options for Toothache

Posted on 1/25/2021 by Fern Creek Dentistry
Effective Medicine Options for ToothacheWhen you experience a toothache unexpectedly, you just want to stop the pain immediately. Of course, the only way to get to the root of the problem is to make a dental appointment. In the meantime, you should also use some OTC medicines that can help alleviate the discomfort.

Common Causes of Toothache

At Fern Creek Dentistry, some of the most common causes of toothache that Prashant Patel, DDS and Dr. Patel encounter are:

•  A dull ache or a sharp pain may both indicate a cavity.
•  If you experience prolonged throbbing pain, this may be due to an infection inside your tooth or gums.
•  Sometimes the intense pressure from mucous accumulation in your sinuses may be mistaken for toothache.
•  Gum disease or periodontal disease can lead to the destruction of soft and hard tissue of the mouth, leading to pain.

Common Medicine For Managing Toothache

Depending on your symptoms, some medicine may be able to alleviate tooth pain while you wait for your appointment. Common medicines include:

•  Benzocaine: Benzocaine is a topical pain-relief medicine that relieves pain around your tooth. When you apply the medicine to your teeth and gums, it can reduce gum swelling, the twinges of the toothache, and pressure related to a sinus infection. However, avoid using this medicine on children younger than two years of age.
•  NSAIDs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are a safe and effective way to relieve toothache for a short term. These medicines not just reduce pain but also reduce the inflammation caused by an abscessed tooth or infection. You can use ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen for pain relief but do not use them for more than 10 days without consulting your GP.
•  Acetaminophen: This medicine can reduce pain and fever caused by infection but is not very effective against inflammation. Because of its pain-relieving properties, acetaminophen is a good first option for temporary pain management related to cavities.

Permanent Solution for Toothache

Although all the above medicines have an anesthetic effect, they should only be taken as temporary measures, not permanent solutions for tooth pain. Toothache usually has an underlying cause which you should get treated by us.

Remember, delaying treatment for toothache can worsen the problem and can cause irreparable damage to your gums and teeth. That is why you should keep your six-monthly checkup appointments to catch any potential dental issues in their early stages before they become painful.
