Statesville Dental ExamYou don't bat an eyelash when it comes to getting regular physical exams. After all, they are an important part of keeping your body healthy. Just like physical exams are important to your overall health, dental exams are important to your oral health. Believe it or not, these exams are also important for your overall wellbeing as well. Fern Creek Dentistry can help you to protect your oral and overall health with regular dental exams. Types of Dental ExamsThe most common type of dental exam is your routine dental exam. This is also called a periodic dental exam. During this exam, we look over the different parts of your mouth, checking for signs and symptoms of different oral conditions. If it is your first time at our office, or if you have not had a dental exam in quite some time, you will receive what is known as a comprehensive dental exam. This one is a bit more thorough. Before we look over your mouth, we first discuss your medical history and lifestyle habits. This information is important because some conditions can affect what types of treatments you can receive. The development of oral health issues can also worsen certain existing medical conditions. By going over your history, we are better able to tailor your exams to meet your individual needs. There are also what are known as limited dental exams. These are the exams you receive when you are exhibiting symptoms and need diagnosis and treatment. During these exams, we go over your symptoms and look over your mouth. There are some situations in which we also take digital x-rays in addition to looking inside of your mouth. X-rays help to show us areas of your mouth that we cannot see on our own. X-rays for routine dental exams are typically taken once a year. A full set of x-rays is generally taken during a comprehensive exam. X-rays may also be necessary to get to the root of any symptoms you are exhibiting. How Often Do I Need a Dental Exam?It is recommended that you have a routine dental exam biannually. Many issues do not exhibit symptoms when they are first beginning, so these exams can help us to detect their presence before you ever know anything is wrong. However, if you do exhibit symptoms of an issue between your routine exams, it is important that you schedule an exam rather than waiting until your next routine appointment. What are the Benefits of an Exam?During your dental exams, we check every part of your mouth. We check for signs and symptoms of many different issues, including gum disease, tooth decay, and cavities. We assess the alignment of your teeth and jaws. We look for areas of wear and other damage. With x-ray images, we can check for damage to your jawbone and tooth roots, look for areas of bone loss, check for impacted teeth, and detect infections. By detecting these issues, we can provide you with the treatment you need. The earlier issues are found, the easier, less invasive, and less expensive treatments are. Routine dental exams, like routine physical exams, are an essential part of keeping you healthy.
