Nitrous Oxide
Statesville, NC

A patient receiving nitrous oxide for a procedure at Fern Creek Dentistry. At Fern Creek Dentistry, we want all of our patients to receive the dental care they need to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile. Unfortunately, some patients may forgo necessary procedures because of dental-related phobias. If you have fear or anxiety associated with oral surgery, we are here to help! We use sedation dentistry to treat different levels of anxiety, and put you in various states of relaxation.

There are four types of sedation dentistry: light, moderate, deep, and general anesthesia. For procedures that only require a light level of sedation, we often recommend inhalation sedation—the use of nitrous oxide.

Nitrous Oxide Procedure

Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is used as a local sedation method. Nitrous Oxide is one of the most popular and effective forms of dental sedation. This is because the gas relaxes patients by producing feelings of euphoria. Another reason for its popularity is the great speed at which it takes effect and wears off. For these reasons and more, nitrous oxide is considered one of the safest, easiest, and most effective ways to treat dental phobias.

Immediately preceding surgery, Prashant Patel, DDS will administer the nitrous oxide through a breathing apparatus that is placed over your nose and mouth. Typically, we gradually increase the dosage until we reach the right state of relaxation. You will experience feelings of euphoria, contentedness, sleepiness, and overall well-being. Safe levels of nitrous oxide and oxygen will be continuously pumped throughout the procedure.

Although you are sedated, nitrous oxide allows you to respond to commands and questions if necessary. During this time, you will experience no anxiety of any kind. In fact, the procedure will be over before you know it.

After the procedure, the effects of nitrous oxide sedation will wear off completely within five to 10 minutes. This is a major advantage. Other forms of sedation, like IV and oral conscious, can have effects that last far beyond the procedure time. Patients who undergo nitrous oxide will not need an escort and can drive themselves to and from the office.

Most patients experience little or no side effects. Immediately following the procedure, we will pump oxygen into your lungs to remove the last traces of the gas, and prevent headaches. It is a good idea to eat something light before the procedure, and avoid a heavy meal for the first few hours after.

Nitrous Oxide for Children

If your child needs to undergo oral surgery, you may be worried about their anxiety. Not only is nitrous oxide safe for children, but it is also the preferred method. If you are feeling uncomfortable, talk with Prashant Patel, DDS to learn more about other sedation options, such as oral conscious sedation and IV sedation.

Do You Qualify for Nitrous Oxide

While it is the most popular form of sedation, nitrous oxide may not be right for you. If you are in the first trimester of pregnancy, suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a cobalamin deficiency, or a methylenetetrahydrofolate deficiency, Prashant Patel, DDS may not recommend nitrous oxide. However, most patients will qualify for treatment.
